New to this project: Start with Part 1
Part 42: On-Line Resources and a Final Word
During the writing of these 42 posts I’ve discovered a great many wonderful resources for World Builders, and would like to acknowledge the work others have done, and share some links with you.
General World Building
Wikipedia, as always, has a lot to say about World Building (and everything else!)
Basilicus is an interesting collection of World Building guides
Orion’s Arm Universe Project is a huge collection of tips, suggestions and strategies… as well as being very well done
Patricia C. Wrede has a wonderful list of questions used to help create a world
Stephanie Cottrell Bryant has written Magical World Builder, a guide for Fantasy writers
Fantasy Worldbuilding resources, is specifically for Fantasy and Science Fiction writers
Holly Lisle’s “Questions About World Building” is short, but to the point
Languages
Wikipedia (again) has a wonderful page on the making of a new language
For those who really want to get hands-on with a new language, The Language Construction Kit is a wonderful resource
How To Build a Language is an in-depth look at the process
There a great many other resources out there. While I have found these useful and informative, this list has barely scratched the surface of what is available. Perhaps you will create the next powerful resource for building worlds. I hope so, and look forward to stumbling across your work one day.
Finally, I want to thank those of you who struggled through this 42-part blog post. Producing these posts has been a challenge, but one that has been rewarding in so many ways. But now it is time for you to roll up your sleeves, and if you haven’t started yet, to get crackin’ with your own private world.
What you will learn about your settings, your characters, and what drives them will be remarkable. What you learn about yourself in this process will be priceless.
Write on!
