A Musical Note: 4 Non-Blondes – What’s Up?

by Richard W Scott on July 3, 2010

If you have followed the “A Musical Note” feature on UhW, you will by now have noticed that my musical taste is at the very least eclectic.  There are few forms of music I do not care for.

An example would be “Lee-kay”, a Thai form which always sounded to me like a domestic argument to the beat of pots and pans.  I should note that I am very fond of Thailand, the Thai people, and much of their culture.  I am not overly fond of Dixieland Jazz or some of the more repetitive Blues numbers, e.g., “My baby doesn’t love me, and I feel bad, my baby doesn’t love me, and I feel bad, she was the best baby I ever had…”.

To be fair, there are exceptions even to those few musical genres I don’t care for.

On the other hand, there are endless types of music that I just love.

I’ve always loved today’s song.  It always felt vibrant, full of life and energy, but until I found this video, I was hard-pressed to say why.

Now that I’ve seen the video, I know why.  These women sing full-out, hearts on fire.

I sincerely hope you enjoy “What’s Up? by 4 Non-Blondes.

25 years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the whole world’s MADE UP OF this brotherhood of man
FOR whatever that means

And so I cry sometimes when I’m lying in bed
Just to get it all out, what’s in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take A deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs,
What’s goin’ on

And I say hey…. hey….
I said hey, what’s goin’ on
And I say hey…. hey….
I said hey, what’s goin’ on

Ooh, Ooh, Oooohh, Oooohh, what’s up…
Ooh, Ooh, Oooohh, Oooohh, what’s up…

And I try, oh my God, do I try
I try all the time in this institution
And I pray, oh my God, do I pray
I pray every single day FOR A REVOLUTION!

And so I cry sometimes when I’m lying in bed
Just to get it all out, what’s in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs,
WHAT’S GOIN’ ON!!

And I say hey…. hey….
I said hey, what’s goin’ on
And I say hey…. hey….
I said hey, what’s goin’ on
And I say hey…. hey….
I said hey, what’s goin’ on
And I say hey…. hey….
I said hey, what’s goin’ on

Ooh, Ooh, Oooohh, Oooohh, what’s up…

25 years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

Ah! The song really got to me after about the second verse. Grass roots music without a doubt. Seems to me that it’s the lyric or the philosophy that perks your interest.
I have trouble with some forms of jazz too. It can be very Bach-rococo sometimes. I agree about Dixieland.
But this number is so ‘the music of the oppressed’, – hint of being in asylum perhaps with reference to ‘the institution’, that I think that’s where it get’s it’s energy from. Thank you for finding this and sharing. Perhaps you will like it even more after seeing the lyrics, if you haven’t found them already. I wondered for a moment whether I was going to let everybody down. But – doesn’t the web amaze me – they were there!!!!

Just got an insight through a dialogue on nrhatch’s blog today. I meant to comment on this earlier, but couldn’t see the distinction clearly enough. Please know that in general my comments were general. But with respect to my comment about Dixieland, I was expressing merely a shared personal sentiment. I listened to U-Tube renditions of Dixieland last night, in an attempt, or with the urge to clarify this for myself. I must confess that I enjoyed seeing a woman dance in the street to a tune I did not know. Maybe what we look for is what we see!
All the best RikScott. I miss our ‘messages’ and hope you have something to be critiqued in due course.

domestic argument; how funny :)
I don’t like rap and kwaito, all those angry songs with cussing lyrics.

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is needed to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% certain. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
