Blogging Workshop

by Richard W Scott on July 16, 2010

Tomorrow, Saturday (July 17th) I have the honor of being co-instructor with my Blogging guru, Dr. Bill Belew, for a Blogging Workshop for the Fremont Area Writers Club.  I can’t wait.  DeVry University has graciously donated space for the workshop.

This opportunity snuck up on me from behind and tapped me on my shoulder, and I’m so very glad it did.

Dr. Belew—if you follow this blog, you’ve read his name here many times—is the guy who got me off my butt and blogging.  UhW is my third blog.  The first two died a lingering and horrible death.  They were abandoned to the wild.

Blogging, since attending Dr. Belew’s course in January of 2010, has become so much a part of me that even though I take Sundays off, these days, I’m still working on this blog, on the Eclectic-Engine, and the (very) new one, Hostage Situation, as well as other writing projects.

Did a schedule of posting 4 – 5 times daily eat into my writing time?  At first, it did.  Yes.  But that didn’t last.  They say that if you want to get something done, give to a busy person to do.  They won’t put it off.  Sound advice, I’d say.

During the workshop tomorrow I will encourage students—who have been promised they would leave with an active blog—to comment on a post that will go up at regular time tomorrow (7:30, Pacific).   I will also encourage them to link to the “Welcome to Blogging” post I’ll put up at the same time, so they can get their first experience of linking to another blog.

Why do all of this?  Why encourage others to blog?  Doesn’t that detract from the number of people in the pool to read my stuff?

Last one first: There are so many people in the world reading blogs every day that even if everyone who reads them began to write a blog, there would still be an over-abundance of potential readers.  The trick is to learn how to attract them.

Why encourage new bloggers?  Because blogging is fun, it is informative, and perhaps best of all, it teaches one to write to a deadline.

Watch this space tomorrow for more on the Fremont Area Writers Blogging Workshop!  It’s gonna be a hoot!

I’m a little afraid, how many of them are there, will we feel obliged to welcome each and every one?

Hi, Cin

A welcome to them would be welcome, but not necessary. I’m expecting about 20 people to show up for the course, and that some will get fully involved. Gonna do my best to encourage them.

Bring them on. They’ll have lots of insight. After all, my comments (my meanderings) are taken. I’m looking forward to what these privileged students of yours will be adding to your post. I can’t do any better than to learn from them. I’ll get to blogging yet. It will just take more time than I anticipated when I went into my first 9 posts without knowing a thing. It couldn’t last.

You have a great point there, Loreen. These new folks are all writers, after all.

I learn from you, and from all of the commenters on UhW quite often.

It is indeed an exciting possibility.
